We\u2019ve already looked at how to use \u4e86 in the previous lesson, so in this lesson I\u2019ll only be explaining \u8fc7, and then move on to compare it with \u4e86. Obviously being clear about \u4e86 is vital in understanding the difference between \u4e86 and \u8fc7, so if you don\u2019t really understand\u4e86, I highly recommend watching the previous lesson first, and come back to this after that, because otherwise, my explanation in this lesson may not make much sense, and you might find it hard to follow. In fact, as you will find out later on, to truly understand \u8fc7, you have to know \u4e86 well enough.<\/p>\n<p>Just a very brief recap, there are basically two types of \u4e86:<\/p>\n<strong>1. Aspect particle (aka \u4e861)<\/strong>\n<br>Primarily placed after the verb, and indicates the completion of an action.\n<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:10px\"><\/div>\n<strong>2. Modal particle (aka \u4e862)<\/strong>\n<br>Primarily placed at the end of a sentence, and indicates change.\n<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:60px\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"su-heading su-heading-style-default su-heading-align-center\" id=\"\" style=\"font-size:36px;margin-bottom:20px\"><div class=\"su-heading-inner\"><strong>Aspect Particle \u8fc7<\/strong><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Now on to \u8fc7. As with many other words, \u8fc7 has numerous meanings. We\u2019ll only be looking at \u8fc7 the particle, which is the one that can be confused with \u4e86.<\/p>\n<p>First, let\u2019s look at the position. As we saw in the examples at the beginning, \u8fc7 comes right after the verb.<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:10px\"><\/div>\n<h4>verb&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;+&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\u8fc7<\/h4>\n<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:20px\"><\/div>\n<p>Next, let\u2019s look at the meaning. The first is \u8fc7 indicating <strong>past experience<\/strong>, and the second is \u8fc7 indicating <strong>completion<\/strong>. For the sake of simplicity, let\u2019s call them \u2018experience \u8fc7\u2019 and \u2018completion \u8fc7\u2019.<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:20px\"><\/div>\n<h3>A. Can you tell if this \u4e861 or \u4e862? Yup, it\u2019s \u4e862. Completion \u8fc7 is often used together with \u4e862. This is one way to determine which \u8fc7 you\u2019re looking at. If there is \u4e862 at the end, then there is a high chance that it is completion \u8fc7. But be careful, <em>this is not always the case<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>If you have watched my previous lesson, does the structure of 4a ring a bell? Take a look at this sentence from our previous lesson:<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:\u201c10\u201dpx\"><\/div>\n<p>W\u01d2 ch\u012ble f\u00e0n le.<br><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u6211\u5403\u4e86\u996d\u4e86\u3002<\/span><br><a href=\"https:\/\/akikolingoland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/03i-\u6211\u5403\u4e86\u996d\u4e86.mp3\">\u6211\u5403\u4e86\u996d\u4e86<\/a><br>I\u2019ve (already) eaten.<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:\u201c10\u201dpx\"><\/div>\n<p>Doesn\u2019t this look strikingly similar to example 4a? Change the object from \u996d to \u7cbd\u5b50, and the particle from \u4e86 to \u8fc7. Voila! We have sentence 4a \u6211\u5403\u8fc7\u7cbd\u5b50\u4e86!<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:\u201c10\u201dpx\"><\/div>\n<p>So we can see by now that completion \u8fc7 is very similar to \u4e861. Just like \u4e861, it is placed after the verb. And like \u4e861, it also expresses completion. <em>(Remember that it\u2019s similar to \u4e861, not \u4e862.)<\/em> The \u4e862 at the end of 4a \u6211\u5403\u8fc7\u7cbd\u5b50\u4e86 functions just like what we learnt in the previous lesson &#8211; confirming the completion of the verb \u5403, and tells us that this is the new situation. And do you recall that \u4e862 is often translated as \u2018already\u2019? You can see that it is the same here, confirming and emphasising that something is already done.<\/p>\n<p>You might be asking then, can we replace \u8fc7 with \u4e861 in 4a? Sure we can! We haven\u2019t really talked about the difference between 2a \u6211\u5403\u8fc7\u7cbd\u5b50 and 4a \u6211\u5403\u8fc7\u7cbd\u5b50\u4e86. So as I said, 2a is talking about past experience, and 4a, about completion. Simple and straightforward, isn\u2019t it? Some people might find the following bit of explanation a little redundant, but bear with me as I\u2019d like to be sure that I\u2019ve made things clear.<\/p>\n<p>When you want to say that you\u2019ve tried rice dumplings before at some point in your life, you say 2a \u6211\u5403\u8fc7\u7cbd\u5b50. Imagine there is a list of life experiences for you to tick, and you tick 2a \u6211\u5403\u8fc7\u7cbd\u5b50, kind of like listing your past work experience. As for 4a \u6211\u5403\u8fc7\u7cbd\u5b50\u4e86, imagine that today is the Dragon Boat Festival (that\u2019s when we eat rice dumplings), and you happen to be visiting your friend. It confirms the completion of the verb \u5403, and tells us that this is the new situation now. Which means, while \u6211\u5403\u8fc7\u7cbd\u5b50 is more about stating the fact that you have experienced this in the <strong>PAST<\/strong>, \u6211\u5403\u8fc7\u7cbd\u5b50\u4e86 is more about <strong>NOW<\/strong>. There has been change, and this is the current situation.<\/p>\n<p>This brings us to the next point that might frustrate you. So we\u2019ve seen that in the sentence 4a \u6211\u5403\u8fc7\u7cbd\u5b50\u4e86, \u8fc7 expresses completion, not past experience, because there is \u4e862 at the end. However, I also said that this is not always true. How so?<\/p>\n<p>Firstly, having \u4e862 at the end may not always mean it is completion \u8fc7. Sometimes it might be experience \u8fc7.<\/p>\n<p>Now that we have had a closer look at \u4e862, can you see 4a \u6211\u5403\u8fc7\u7cbd\u5b50\u4e86 from another angle? Apart from meaning <em>I\u2019ve already had rice dumplings just now<\/em> (expressing completion), it could also mean <em>I\u2019ve <strong>now<\/strong> had the experience of eating rice dumplings<\/em> (expressing experience). You\u2019ve always wanted to try rice dumplings, and now you\u2019ve just tried it. Finally, you can tick the check box for \u6211\u5403\u8fc7\u7cbd\u5b50. Or, it could even be simply, <em>I\u2019ve already had rice dumplings before<\/em> (I\u2019ve already had the experience of eating dumplings in the past). His emphasis is more on \u2018having done watching it\u2019, rather than simply a \u2018past experience\u2019. To put this in simpler terms, we could say \u770b\u8fc7 is simply saying you have had the experience, with no hidden layers of nuance, whereas \u770b\u8fc7\u4e86 carries the connotation that you\u2019ve already done it, there\u2019s no need to do it again. Could we flip this and switch \u770b\u8fc7 with \u770b\u8fc7\u4e86 and vice versa? The answer is yes, that\u2019s possible. The hidden nuance would then be switched.<\/p>\n<p>Having said all this, please don\u2019t stress yourself on this, because as you can see from the above dialogue, sometimes the difference can be really minute and people don\u2019t usually notice all this. If you think of the original meaning of the verb \u8fc7 which expresses going through something, meaning-wise, experience \u8fc7 and completion \u8fc7 certainly sometimes do overlap. Or rather, should we say that there sometimes is no divergence of meaning?<\/p>\n<p>Now let us get back to the topic of this lesson &#8211; the difference between \u4e86 and \u8fc7. You might have realised by now that in order to understand and use \u4e86 and \u8fc7 well, actually, rather than finding the differences between them, the more crucial thing is to determine which \u4e86 and which \u8fc7 you are looking at.
