In this article I&#8217;ll attempt to deal a bit with some common words that can be confusing when the order is turned around. Specifically, we&#8217;ll be looking at location words, which I&#8217;ve introduced in this video here:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><div class=\"video-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mandarin Weekly 25 - Location Words_Where is kitty?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/16anfwEdrBA?feature=oembed&wmode=opaque\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>(<a title=\"Asking The Way\" href=\"\/en\/location-words\/\" target=\"_blank\">here for audio list<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s expand a little and look at how seemingly similar words are actually quite different.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the structure I introduced in the video:<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-caption\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #f599ff;\">noun + location word (front\/ back\/ left\/ right, etc)<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This translates to: front\/ back\/ left\/ right of noun<\/p>\n<p>So take for example the noun \u95e8 (m\u00e9n \u2013 door) and the location word \u540e (h\u00f2u \u2013 back). \u95e8\u540e would therefore mean the back of the door &#8211; behind the door.<\/p>\n<p>Xi\u01ceom\u0101o z\u00e0i m\u00e9n h\u00f2u.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u5c0f\u732b\u5728\u95e8\u540e\u3002<\/span><br \/>\n<em>Kitty is behind the door.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Y\u012bfu gu\u00e0 z\u00e0i m\u00e9n h\u00f2u ba.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u8863\u670d\u6302\u5728\u95e8\u540e\u5427\u3002<\/span><br \/>\n<em>Hang the clothes behind the door.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But what if we flipped it over and said \u540e\u95e8? It then becomes back door.<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Xi\u01ceom\u0101o c\u00f3ng h\u00f2um\u00e9n j\u00ecnlai le.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u5c0f\u732b\u4ece\u540e\u95e8\u8fdb\u6765\u4e86\u3002<\/span><br \/>\n<em>Kitty came in through\u00a0the back door.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>H\u00f2um\u00e9n y\u00ecb\u0101n su\u01d2zhe.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u540e\u95e8\u4e00\u822c\u9501\u7740\u3002<\/span><br \/>\n<em>The back door is usually locked.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s look at \u95e8 again, this time with \u524d (qi\u00e1n \u2013 front). What would the following mean?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">m\u00e9n qi\u00e1n<br \/>\n\u95e8\u524d<br \/>\nqi\u00e1nm\u00e9n<br \/>\n\u524d\u95e8<\/p>\n<p>Yup, you\u2019re right! We have \u2018in front of the door\u2019 \uff08\u95e8\u524d\uff09versus \u2018front door\u2019\uff08\u524d\u95e8\uff09.<\/p>\n<p>M\u00e9nqi\u00e1n y\u01d2u y\u00ec k\u0113 d\u00e0sh\u00f9.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u95e8\u524d\u6709\u4e00\u68f5\u5927\u6811\u3002<\/span><br \/>\n<em>There\u2019s a huge tree in front of the door.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>W\u01d2 y\u01d2u qi\u00e1nm\u00e9n de y\u00e0oshi.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u6211\u6709\u524d\u95e8\u7684\u94a5\u5319\u3002<\/span><br \/>\n<em>I have the key to the front door.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s have a look at more examples with another location word \u2013 \u4e0a (sh\u00e0ng &#8211; above).<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll give you some examples. See if you can guess the meanings before I tell you! <span style=\"color: #cc0063;\">Hint: in the examples below, \u4e0a functions as a verb, instead of a location word, in the flipped-over counterparts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">1) <span class=\"su-highlight\" style=\"background:#99d5ff;color:#000000\">&nbsp;\u684c zhu\u014d &#8211; table&nbsp;<\/span>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 48px;\">Combined with\u4e0a\uff1a<br \/>\n\u684c\u4e0a vs \u4e0a\u684c<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">2) <span class=\"su-highlight\" style=\"background:#99d5ff;color:#000000\">&nbsp;\u8f66 ch\u0113 \u2013 car, vehicle&nbsp;<\/span>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 48px;\">Combined with \u4e0a\uff1a<br \/>\n\u8f66\u4e0a vs \u4e0a\u8f66<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">3) <span class=\"su-highlight\" style=\"background:#99d5ff;color:#000000\">&nbsp;\u697c l\u00f3u \u2013 building, level (of building)&nbsp;<\/span>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 48px;\">Combined with \u4e0a\uff1a<br \/>\n\u697c\u4e0a vs \u4e0a\u697c<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">4) <span class=\"su-highlight\" style=\"background:#99d5ff;color:#000000\">&nbsp;\u5c71 sh\u0101n &#8211; mountain&nbsp;<\/span>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 48px;\">Combined with \u4e0a\uff1a<br \/>\n\u5c71\u4e0a vs \u4e0a\u5c71<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">5) <span class=\"su-highlight\" style=\"background:#99d5ff;color:#000000\">&nbsp;\u53f0t\u00e1i &#8211; stage&nbsp;<\/span>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 48px;\">Combined with \u4e0a\uff1a<br \/>\n\u53f0\u4e0a vs \u4e0a\u53f0<\/p>\n<p>Have you figured out what they each mean? Let\u2019s have a look one by one!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">1) <span class=\"su-highlight\" style=\"background:#99d5ff;color:#000000\">&nbsp;\u684c zhu\u014d &#8211; table&nbsp;<\/span>\n<p>\u684c means table, so \u684c\u4e0a simply means on the table. For example,<\/p>\n<p>Zhu\u014dshang zh\u00e8me du\u014d c\u00e0i, sh\u00e9i zu\u00f2 de?<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u684c\u4e0a\u8fd9\u4e48\u591a\u83dc\uff0c\u8c01\u505a\u7684\uff1f<\/span><br \/>\n<em>There are so many dishes on the table. Who made them?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When it is in front, \u4e0a functions as a verb,<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/span> and it has to do with getting up, moving upwards.<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/span> So \u4e0a\u684c means to serve a dish \u2013 get the dish up onto the table.<\/p>\n<p>C\u00e0i d\u014du zu\u00f2h\u01ceo le, k\u011by\u01d0 sh\u00e0ng zhu\u014d le.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u83dc\u90fd\u505a\u597d\u4e86\uff0c\u53ef\u4ee5\u4e0a\u684c\u4e86\u3002<\/span><br \/>\n<em>The dishes are ready and can be served.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">2) <span class=\"su-highlight\" style=\"background:#99d5ff;color:#000000\">&nbsp;\u8f66 ch\u0113 \u2013 car, vehicle&nbsp;<\/span>\n<p>\u8f66 means car, so \u8f66\u4e0a means in the car, on board.<\/p>\n<p>Ch\u0113shang b\u00f9zh\u01d4n ch\u014duy\u0101n.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u8f66\u4e0a\u4e0d\u51c6\u62bd\u70df\u3002<\/span><br \/>\n<em>Smoking is not allowed in the car.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>What about when \u4e0a comes before \u8f66 as a verb? It means to get on board.<\/p>\n<p>Y\u00e0o ch\u016bf\u0101 le, sh\u00e0ng ch\u0113 ba.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u8981\u51fa\u53d1\u4e86\uff0c\u4e0a\u8f66\u5427\u3002<\/span><br \/>\n<em>We\u2019re departing soon, get in the car.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">3) <span class=\"su-highlight\" style=\"background:#99d5ff;color:#000000\">&nbsp;\u697c l\u00f3u \u2013 building, level (of building)&nbsp;<\/span>\n<p>\u697c means building or level of a building, so \u697c\u4e0a means upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>L\u00f3ushang zh\u00f9zhe ge l\u01ceot\u00e0itai.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u697c\u4e0a\u4f4f\u7740\u4e2a\u8001\u592a\u592a\u3002<\/span><br \/>\n<em>An old lady lives upstairs.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When \u4e0a comes in front of \u697c, it means to go upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>L\u01ceot\u00e0itai sh\u00e0ng l\u00f3u xi\u016bxi le.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u8001\u592a\u592a\u4e0a\u697c\u4f11\u606f\u4e86\u3002<\/span><br \/>\n<em>The old lady has gone upstairs to rest.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">4) <span class=\"su-highlight\" style=\"background:#99d5ff;color:#000000\">&nbsp;\u5c71 sh\u0101n &#8211; mountain&nbsp;<\/span>\n<p>Having come so far, this should be easy. \u5c71\u4e0a means the top of a mountain, while \u4e0a\u5c71 means to climb a mountain. Probably the most difficult part is the pronunciation!<\/p>\n<p>Sh\u0101nshang f\u0113ngj\u01d0ng t\u00e8bi\u00e9 m\u011bi.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u5c71\u4e0a\u98ce\u666f\u7279\u522b\u7f8e\u3002<\/span><br \/>\n<em>The scenery on top of the mountain is exceptionally beautiful.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>H\u011bn du\u014d r\u00e9n sh\u00e0ng sh\u0101n k\u00e0n r\u00ecch\u016b.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u5f88\u591a\u4eba\u4e0a\u5c71\u770b\u65e5\u51fa\u3002<\/span><br \/>\n<em>Many people climb up the mountain to watch the sunrise.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">5) <span class=\"su-highlight\" style=\"background:#99d5ff;color:#000000\">&nbsp;\u53f0t\u00e1i &#8211; stage&nbsp;<\/span>\n<p>This is again quite straightforward. \u53f0\u4e0a \u2013 on stage; \u4e0a\u53f0 \u2013 get on stage.<\/p>\n<p>T\u00e1ishang de y\u01cenyu\u00e1n g\u00e8g\u00e8 y\u01cenj\u00ec j\u012bngzh\u00e0n.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u53f0\u4e0a\u7684\u6f14\u5458\u5404\u4e2a\u6f14\u6280\u7cbe\u6e5b\u3002<\/span><br \/>\n<em>Every single one of the actors on stage has excellent acting skills.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Sh\u00e0ng t\u00e1i bi\u01ceoy\u01cen d\u0101ngr\u00e1n hu\u00ec j\u01d0nzh\u0101ng.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u4e0a\u53f0\u8868\u6f14\u5f53\u7136\u4f1a\u7d27\u5f20\u3002<\/span><br \/>\n<em>Getting on stage to perform is of course unnerving.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-caption\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #cc0063;\">there&#8217;s more up on the stage! (offstage?)<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Now that we\u2019ve come to the last example \u53f0, here\u2019s something extra about the word, as well as some questions for you:<\/p>\n<p>The antonym of \u4e0a is \u4e0b (xi\u00e0 \u2013 below\/ to get down). We know that \u4e0a\u53f0 means to go on stage, so \u4e0b\u53f0 naturally means to get off the stage. But it also has other meanings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">a) to resign. This is usually used negatively, to refer to a politician losing power and stepping down.<\/p>\n<p>T\u0101 zh\u01d0 d\u0101ng le y\u00ecni\u00e1n z\u01d2ngt\u01d2ng ji\u00f9 xi\u00e0 t\u00e1i le.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u4ed6\u53ea\u5f53\u4e86\u4e00\u5e74\u603b\u7edf\u5c31\u4e0b\u53f0\u4e86\u3002<\/span><br \/>\n<em>He stepped down after only one year as president.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">b) to get out of an embarrassing situation.
