\u7f18\u5206 yu\u00e1nf\u00e8n, or just \u7f18 yu\u00e1n, is a term we\u00a0use an awful lot. In English, it is often translated as \u2018destiny\u2019 and \u2018fate\u2019, but these two words do not actually convey the real meaning of this term. The terms \u2018affinity\u2019 and \u2018karmic connection\u2019 would probably be closer translations, albeit not exact. The essence of this proverb is, if you are karmically connected, no matter how far apart you may be, the connection will bring you together. On the other hand, if there is no karmic connection, you would not know the person even if they were right before you.<\/p>\n

When and how do we use the term? As you might expect, most often it is used to talk about relationships.<\/p>\n

W\u01d2 g\u0113n t\u0101 h\u011bn y\u01d2uyu\u00e1n, xi\u01ceoxu\u00e9 d\u00e0o d\u00e0xu\u00e9 y\u00eczh\u00ed sh\u00ec t\u00f3ngxu\u00e9.
\n\u6211\u8ddf\u5979\u5f88\u6709\u7f18\uff0c\u5c0f\u5b66\u5230\u5927\u5b66\u4e00\u76f4\u662f\u540c\u5b66\u3002<\/span>
\nWe\u2019re really karmically connected – we\u2019ve been classmates from primary school to university.<\/em><\/p>\n

\n\u53ea\u80fd\u8bf4\u4f60\u8ddf\u4ed6\u6ca1\u6709\u7f18\u5206\uff0c\u65e2\u7136\u5206\u624b\u4e86\uff0c\u5c31\u628a\u4ed6\u5fd8\u4e86\u5427\u3002<\/span>
\nWe can only say that you two are not destined to be together. Since you\u2019ve parted, just forget him.<\/em><\/p>\n

\nI don\u2019t seem to have any karmic connection with America. I\u2019ve wanted to visit a few times, but each time I would have to cancel my trip for some reason.<\/em><\/p>\n
